DREProstate Ca: MRI vs TRUS Bx

Trans-rectal US Biopsy is not without significant morbidity including life threatening sepsis, though. It has limited sensitivity and has been criticised for over detection of insignificant cancer in one third of cases.  If only, there is some other investigations that could help triage the elevated PSAs. What about MRI prostate which is increasingly being used prior to TRUSB?  .

MedicalSpectrumLogo Breast MRI - We’ve come a longBreastMRI way

MRI is more sensitive than mammography and ultrasound particularly in dense breasts. The overall sensitivity of detection with breast MRI is approximately 96% and the sensitivity increases if MR is used in conjunction with mammography and ultrasound.  Let’s have a look at a case study.

Coated Aspirin - is it actually safer?

heartburnSurely, that will reduce GI bleeding, won’t it? "Enteric" comes from the Greek word for intestine, and an enteric coating does allow aspirin to pass through the stomach to the small intestine before dissolving. The aspirin tablet is coated with a combination of cellulose, silicon, or other inactive ingredients has resistance to disintegration in the stomach; this property allows dissolution of the drug in the more neutral alkaline environment of the duodenum

Low back pain – finding the source of paiBoneScann

Facet joints connect the vertebral bodies to one another. They can also become arthritic and can be a source of back pain. The facet joints are located at the back of the spine and counterbalance the inter-vertebral discs. They help to keep the normal alignment of the spinal vertebrae and limit excessive motion. The pain and discomfort caused by degeneration and arthritis of this part of the spine is called facet arthropathy.

Blocked coronary arteries ultimately lead to cardiac cell death. But myocardial cells don’t die immediately and their survival, amongst many things, depend on the adequacy of the collateral circulation. Optimising risk factor control reduces the risk of acute and ongoing blockages. Collateral vessels are present from birth but they do not usually carry blood. They can grow larger and grow more connections after severe narrowing of the coronary arteries occur but only after weeks – too late to salvage the cardiac cells.

Shingles - is the incidence rising?Shingles

The incidence of shingles has increased across many countries over the last 20-30 years. There were some suggestions that the increase may be due to varicella vaccination programs. However, Leung et al, Hales et al and Yawn et al examined trends over a longer period and found that incidence rates increased continuously across all age groups before the introduction of the varicella vaccination programme and continued to increase throughout the post-vaccination era

Meningococcal Disease - the ABC (W&Y) of vaccines

W strain has become the most prevalent strain nationally and in NSW. Though the total number of cases is low, NSW notifications have almost tripled since 2015, from nine to 26 cases in 2016. 2 more cases have been confirmed in 2017. Of the 256 cases of meningococcal disease in Australia last year, 48-50% were cases of the W strain. W strain has twice the mortality rate of other strains. 8% of people who contracted the strain have died in the last decade, compared to a four per cent mortality rate for other meningococcal strains, according to NSW health.
